Vinyl Grading
Standards.

Every record we sell is graded using the Goldmine Standard — the global benchmark for vinyl condition. Here's exactly what each grade means.

Grading
M MINT

Mint (M)

Absolutely perfect in every way. Never played, possibly unplayed, still in original shrink-wrap with hype sticker. The highest grade and rarely found. Should be able to play without any distortion whatsoever. Theoretical — almost impossible to find in practice.

NM NEAR MINT

Near Mint (NM or M–)

A nearly perfect record. It may have been played once or twice but will appear unplayed. The record should play perfectly with no distortion whatsoever. The cover should have no creases, ring wear, seam splits, or other defects. This is the standard Blacknote targets for all new listings.

VG+ VERY GOOD+

Very Good Plus (VG+)

Shows some signs that it was played and properly cared for. Light scuffs or very light scratches that do not affect sound are acceptable. The record will play perfectly except for very slight noise when the needle drops. The cover may show slight wear, ring wear, or small seam splits.

VG VERY GOOD

Very Good (VG)

Many of the defects found in a VG+ record will be more pronounced. Surface noise will be evident between selections, but should not intrude. The record may show some visual scratches, but they should not affect playback. The cover may show obvious signs of handling and use.

G+ GOOD+

Good Plus (G+) / Good (G)

A record playing at this grade will have significant surface noise, clicks, and marks. The cover will show heavy wear. These records are playable but should be purchased only for their historical value or to fill a gap in a collection. Blacknote rarely stocks below VG.

G+ GOOD+

Poor (P), Fair (F)

The item is cracked, badly warped, and won’t play through without skipping or repeating. The container or cover could be cracked, water-damaged, and heavily marred by wear or writing. If it is a vinyl record, the album cover and inner sleeves are fully split, crinkled, and written upon. Poor (P) or Fair (F) records are generally worth very little.

STEP 01

Visual Inspection

Every record is visually inspected under a bright directional light, revealing surface marks, pressing defects, and groove damage invisible to the naked eye.

STEP 02

Play-Grade

Records graded VG+ or higher are played on a reference turntable with a new stylus. We listen for distortion, skips, and surface noise before confirming the grade.

STEP 03

Ultrasonic Clean

All used records are ultrasonically cleaned before dispatch. This removes embedded dust and debris that distorts perceived grade and can damage your stylus.
